UNC IPRC is pleased to announce our upcoming seminar, “Practice to Research: Challenges, Successes & Lessons Learned from the Mothers Overcoming Violence through Education & Empowerment (MOVE) Program.”

To develop evidence-based programs for intimate partner violence (IPV), there is a growing call for practice-research partnerships. Despite the intuitive appeal of such partnerships, there is little guidance regarding how researchers and communities can best collaborate with one another to ameliorate IPV. Based on a multi-year study, this presentation will offer recommendations for fostering such collaborations.

The study team, which was comprised of child abuse prevention agency staff, domestic violence agency staff, a funder, and university-based researchers, partnered together to develop, deliver and research an innovative parenting-safety program for adult, female IPV survivors and their children. In this community-developed program, adults and children receive 13-week, therapeutic, psychoeducational support group services.

Together, the team successfully developed and documented the program, examined the program’s acceptability and feasibility, and investigated program outcomes using rigorous qualitative methods and advanced statistical analyzes. Quantitative research findings showed that the program was associated with positive outcomes for families. Qualitative findings underscored that such programs must be positive, supportive and non-judgmental. Other project accomplishments include the establishment of a novel program for families with IPV that has now been sustained for seven years; six peer-review journal publications on research findings; and 25 national conference presentations.

Representatives from the community-based programs, the funder and the researchers will offer recommendations for working with families experiencing IPV, key research findings, as well as strategies for fostering successful research collaborations in community-based settings.
