Kevin M. Guskiewicz has been named interim chancellor of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill as of Wednesday, February 6. Guskiewicz succeeds Carol Folt who served as chancellor from July 2013 to January 31, 2019.

Guskiewicz has worked with the Injury Prevention Research Center (IPRC) for 20 years, leading several projects that have been supported by the IPRC’s core funding which is provided by the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. The most recent of these studies was the BeMod Study, a small trial in high schools in Orange and Chatham counties, that used helmet-based accelerometers to teach better tackling and blocking techniques in high school football.

Guskiewicz is closely involved in one of the IPRC’s ongoing projects, the Active Rehab study, a large international cluster-randomized trial of concussion management and rehabilitation.  That study has enrolled 3400 athletes in high schools, colleges, and professional sports. Additionally, the IPRC has close working relationships with the two centers where Guskiewicz is a co-director, the Gfeller Center for Sports-Related Traumatic Brain Injury, and the Center for the Study of Retired Athletes.

The IPRC team congratulates Interim Chancellor Guskiewicz on his new position, and we look forward to continuing to be supportive of his research, for at least another 20 years.
