Addressing suicide prevention through lethal means counseling in emergency care
This talk focuses on prevention of suicide through lethal means counseling. Runyan will discuss her intervention studies focused on pediatric populations in selected hospitals, as well as a region-wide exploration of how hospitals, law enforcement, and gun retailers might work together to address safety planning. She will discuss findings and issues encountered in conducting this type of work.
Dr. Runyan is Professor Emeritus at UNC’s Gillings School of Public Health and directed the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center from 1989-2011. A part time Professor with the Colorado School of Public Health, she currently co-directs their Program for Injury Prevention, Education and Research. Named one of the most influential leaders in injury control by the CDC, she has done research on injury and violence for more than 35 years.
