Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are studying ways to promote healthy relationships and prevent dating abuse with a free online educational program called Moms and Teens for Safe Dates.

The main goal of the research is to understand whether moms and teens like doing the program online and find out ways to improve the program so that it is easy and fun for moms and teens to use and understand. We are not currently enrolling new participants at this time. For more information, please contact us at momsestudy@unc.edu.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Have ever experienced domestic abuse from an intimate partner in the past
  • Are the mom* or maternal caregiver* of at least one child between the ages of 12 and 16 years who lives with you
  • Are willing to spend about 30 minutes a week completing the program with your teen over the next six weeks.

(*This website will reference the words “mom” and “maternal caregiver”. These references also include non-binary people, gender expansive and transgender women.)

What will I do in the study?

  • Moms and teens who participate in the study will be provided with access to the online Moms and Teens for Safe Dates program for about six weeks.
  • The program includes a series of fun easy-to-do online learning modules moms and teens complete together that can be done anytime, anywhere, and on any device that has internet access (a phone, a computer, a tablet).
  • Moms and teens will be asked to spend at least 30 minutes a week completing the program modules over six weeks, but can complete them more quickly if they have time
  • Moms and teens will also be asked to complete three online surveys at the beginning of the study, right after completing the program, and about 4 weeks after finishing the program.

Why participate?

  • The online program was adapted from a series of booklets that were found to increase family cohesion and prevent teen dating abuse and is being provided to you free of charge as a participant in the Mom’s e-study.
  • Moms and teens will each receive $30 gift cards for completing each of the three online surveys. In total your family could receive up to $180 for completing all study activities.
